Seniors I'm Training, yall. Part 1

Sup Muses!?

Working on Squat form. Summer 2021.

For years I've struggled with what I'd focus on with my personal training certification. I've done it all from creating and teaching pre-k physical activity programs to strength and conditioning at Princeton. Although I've enjoyed literally every age group, I found my true calling in the midst of crazy covid year one- 2020. Then, I started training a group of women from my church over Zoom every Saturday for about 30 minutes for several months. The majority of the women were seniors and it kind of…worked. I did low impact exercises: cardio and weight training. Late in 2021, I decided that I was done training millennials- like done done. And yes there were several reasons why I came to this decision and why I'd focus on the 55+ population. The main reason- my age group is too fickle. Seniors say they want to train and they are ready to go and keep going. Communication is clear and the respect is there.

Currently, I have a few senior clients and my goal this year is to work at a senior living center teaching a class. I’ve become very interested in water workouts and may look into a water aerobic certification sooner than later. Perhaps by 2023 I’ll be able to partner with an insurance company that specializes in senior care (Humana maybe?) It’s exciting because the baby boomers are here and having a longer life span than generations before them. HOWEVER, many aren’t doing what they need to do to take care of themselves and working out is a great addition to have an improved quality of life in their golden years.

Part 2 will explore my focuses when training, how I individualize plans and the benefits of being active in your older years . I gotta say figuring this out was my best epiphany of 2021!

This year, seniors, let's get moving. I’m here for ya 😉
